Hello friends! I hope you are enjoying a lovely weekend. Mine has been quiet, relaxing and less productive than usual. I’m sorry for not sharing a Creative Weekend To-Do List yesterday, I promise that next week we’ll be back to regularly scheduled programming!
Welcome to Sparklista Sundays—a fresh new series of interviews with creative and inspiring folks on the web. Maryam from Pamplemousse 1983 was last week’s Sparklista. This week I’m excited to feature Carolyn from Hang On Little Tomato. She and I first connected through Twitter, and have built a lovely blog-friendship over the past year.
Carolyn is a 27-year old gal who just moved to the Big Apple to start a new chapter in her life. Her blog, Hang On Little Tomato, began when she was a law student in Austin, TX—and it’s grown with her since. It’s deeply personal and touches on all aspects of her life from family, friends, food, and fashion…to yoga, creativity, self-awareness, and self-love.
Carolyn is honest, bubbly and completely adorable. I’ve loved having her as a friend, and I’m certain you’ll enjoy getting to know her better in the interview below!
1. Why do you blog?
I blog because I love sharing things that inspire me. I blog because I often seek the advice and stories of my readers, who are both fellow bloggers, personal friends, and simply online acquaintances, and who consistently give me crazy-good feedback. I blog about my life in such an honest way so that my readers get to know me, the real me, and so they can, perhaps, in some way, relate to what I’m talking about. I blog because it’s FUN, and I love meeting new people!
2. What are your favorite creative resources?
This may not come as a surprise to you, but… BLOGS! Anything from fashion to crafting to cooking, blogs definitely serve as my greatest creative resource. I think they’ve even better than magazines, and better yet, they are free! Blogs have taught me how to make a quiche, experiment with mixed media, and be a better listener. They are crazy/sexy/fabulous resources.
3. Who inspires you online? Offline?
Online: Definitely other bloggers. There are so many in my Google Reader that I couldn’t possibly pick just a few. I will say that lately I’ve been getting my bum back in the kitch, and so Smitten Kitchen and Fresh 365 have been incredibly helpful. I’m also obsessed with Fall Fashion and tend to gravitate towards The Glamourai and Fashion Toast for style inspiration. And, of course, j’adore blogs that focus on yoga, creativity, and general life better-ment (is that a word?), and I couldn’t list my faves without including yours!
4. If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to yourself as a budding blogger?
Stay true to yourself and don’t worry about being “popular.” There was a time when I was convinced I had to transform my blog so that it was specifically themed and therefore more appealing to a wider audience, but now I realize that’s just not me.
Maybe one day, when I find one thing in particular I want to focus on, I’ll do that. But for now, I like that my blog is personal. I feel like my readers really know me, and better yet, I know them. It’s tough to do that when you’re pumping out information for the sole purpose of being an attractive blog.
5. What are your favorite things to do when you’re not online?
I love exploring my new city, NYC! It’s been terribly hot this summer so sometimes “exploring” takes a back seat to, say, chilling inside with the A/C blasting in my face. But once it cools down, you’ll find me exploring every nook and cranny this city has to offer. As I mentioned before, I’m also very into cooking lately and spend a great deal of time in my tiny overheated kitchen. Also, j’adore spending time with my friends here. In fact, my friend Stephanie and I are throwing a Labor Day Brunch on her patio, and the menu is totally sick (in a good way!). Think spinach and cheese strata, biscuits and homemade strawberry jam, cherry cornbread cake, and of course, plenty of bubbles & OJ… Wish y’all could come!
6. How do you make every day an extraordinary adventure?
Honestly, and I’m not just saying this because this is a Sparklista series, I am constantly finding ways to add sparkle to my life. Whether that’s writing a grocery list with a glittery pink pen or bejeweling my digital camera or creating a super fun Taylor Swift and Katty Perry-inspired playlist on my iPod to accompany me on my walks to the gym, it’s the little things in life that keep you going. I am unashamedly moi. I don’t care if people make fun of my Hello Kitty key caps or tell me I’m too old to carry a pink heart sequined gym bag, I’m going to do it because it makes me happier and my life sparklier.
