What Do You Believe In?
Posted by kaileenelise on June 21st, 2010I believe in pink.
I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner.
I believe in kissing, kissing a lot.
I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong.
I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.
I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.
(Audrey Hepburn)
Do take time to examine your beliefs closely? Do you consider how your life’s experiences impact the lens from which you view the world?
A recent conversation has caused me to question if my day to day priorities accurately represent my beliefs. In most respects, they do. I usually live with intention. I act with integrity, most of the time. Many people would say that I’m a hard worker.
I’ll readily admit that there are areas of my life in need of renovation—an excavation of out-dated beliefs and construction of new ones.
There are times when I catch myself believing that some day I’ll get back into shape, sort out my finances and become an adult. Of course, I know deep down that today is the only day that counts.
I also find myself believing that people who I consider successful are different from me. That somehow, they possess something I lack. In the dark silence of truth, I know that those experts were once as clueless as I am.
What beliefs do you grasp tightly? Which beliefs are represented by your priorities? Where can you find room for improvement?
Merriam-Webster defines belief as, “a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing.” Eleanor Roosevelt famously stated that, “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
Perhaps then, the future belongs to those who have sound habits of mind and confidence in themselves.

I believe that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason isn’t clear right now.
I believe that beautiful, wonderful nieces make aunts and uncles smile with beaming happiness.
Like you I believe that one day I’ll sort out my finances and be a grown up, but I know today is all that matters.
I also compare myself to others destructively, although I am learning that I do know more than I think I do.
And like Jessica, I believe every single thing happens for a reasons.
I love this post Kaileen. Love! I can still remember the MOMENT when I first asked myself this question and my entire world shifted. We were in the Union reading books and I came across a quote that said something about the Greeks and Romans believing in gods that we now dismiss.
I’m really interested in the space between belief and action. Where is it that the belief becomes so overpowering that the motivation is intrinsic?? Why is that for me, some beliefs translate into my daily life, while others are still just thoughts?? hmmm.
Thanks for the morning thinking.
I believe in happy ever after. It may just not be what society has taught me to think it will be.
Thank you for this inspiring post. It prompted me to return to some of my own beliefs and to examine how I live them in my life!
[...] Some people think articulation is the culmination of belief. Others think it to be the beginning of belief. Some consider articulation to inhibit belief and others simply find it irrelevant. Still, the question floats around in subtle or confronting ways: what do you believe in? [...]
