Connected: The Joy Diet – Week Ten
Posted by Kaileen Elise on November 19th, 2009When we feel love and kindness toward others,
it not only makes others feel loved and cared for,
but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace.
(Dalai Lama)
Together, we have journeyed through Martha Beck’s The Joy Diet and over the weeks we have learned a lot—about ourselves and each other.
The tiny discoveries and slight shifts in behavior from reading this book are not significant or profound, but I hope they endure the tests of time.
Finishing this chapter on Connection, I took away these two points:
You will win emotional security neither by finding some infallible person to love, nor by controlling people who are fallible, but by constantly using your ability to connect.
Becoming still will link you with those who are meant to love you.
As we finish the book and our journey together, my deepest hope is not that Beck’s words stay with us, but that we are able to carry our friendships and connections with us on journeys to come.

I really love your last lines! And I really hope that too!
Have a great week!
I too hope that we can carry our friendships and connections with us on our next journey. This has been my first experience with an online book club and it has been a wonderful experience. Although I have not done all of the exercises, I have learned so much from the wisdom of others. It has been a great way to connect with so many new people
I like that phrase “slight shifts”. That is a good description of what has taken place and those tiny turns can make a huge difference in the long run.
I really enjoy following your blog – and I needed to read this post, in this moment.
Thank you!
Hi kaileen! I hope we stay connected as well. It’s been the best part of the journey. Take care.
I wish for the same thing Kaileen! So glad I found on.. think it was on Twitter no? Anyways, stay sweet, as always.
xo.
Thanks for your post. I love the points that you took from the chapter.
hello
i also practise yoga and i came on your page for the connection art part, i like your collage
have a good day
I hope to continue connecting with you as well! I love your collage… speaks so loudly of the joy of being profoundly present with what’s in front of us in any particular moment. Beautiful!
That was beautifully said.
couldn’t agree more!! love the quote too! love & hugs sweetie! have a fabulous weekend
i didn’t read the book (yet) but i am in full agreement, continued friendship outside of the lines that draw us together–here! here!
Great last lines. Love your post.
The idea of the tiny shifts is crucial to me – I’m terrible at remembering words, facts, statistics to shore up my positions. That has always frustrated me in some way. But I am often aware that my perception or belief has changed because of the exposure. And that can be enough to satisfy me. The insights I’ve gained through this book are largely due to the sharings of many of these wonderful participants, some of whom feel like friends to me now. I hope those connections continue.
Thanks for sharing your journey with connections this week, I have been out of the Joy Diet loop due to an injury but I wanted to check in with everyone. It has been nice connecting with you during this journey.
came back and see that we have some common points, tea, draw, yoga… writing , i am not so good with english, much easier for me in franch
I love your vision card and the take-away quotes from the chapter. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
And I agree that I hope we carry the friendships and connections we have made into future journeys.
